Hero of Ages Review: A Masterpiece of Fantasy

Book: The Hero of Ages
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Genre: Fantasy, Fiction, Magic, Epic Fantasy

I’m going to review this as a book. Then as a trilogy, so be patient.

Hero of Ages was a fabulously paced, and perfect example of why Brandon Sanderson is one of the most prolific and yet widely read fantasy authors of the past 10 years.

The ability to drive such complex narratives into easy to digest stories, with twists, turns, and everything in between is just so accessible.

Hero of Ages is a story of outcasts. Mistborn is a story of outcasts.

It is the story of those outcasts attempting to understand their place in a world that is falling down and breaking apart around them.

The trilogy was a cascading wonder. I feel the three book system can so easily fail. With book one being a convoluted introduction, the second book being lacklustre, or the third falling flat.

None of these issues plagued the Mistborn series (well the first part of the series).

At no point did I find myself turning away, losing interest, or wanting things to move quicker.

The pacing and level of depth is perhaps not equal to that of Stormlight Archives. However, that works in Mistborn’s favour and doesn’t detract from the unique story.

I’ve called it out in each of the previous book’s reviews and I’ll do it again here with bells on.

The characters make this one. Brando Sando does flawed individuals better than anyone, and it feels like every single character is complex and constantly developing.

I implore you to check this out if you haven’t.

Each book was better than the last, with the final portion of Hero of Ages being a well-rounded, fast-paced and cathartic conclusion to the story so far.
