Book: Blood Over Bright Haven
Author: M. L. Wang
She’s done it again.
I was so worried that Sword of Kaigen would be a standalone feat of fantasy greatness. There was nothing to worry about. Blood Over Bright Haven was sublime.
M L Wang writes the oppressed female perspective with such care, focus and attention.
Blood Over Bright Haven is a magical fantasy wherein society is plagued by ignorant fucking men. And Thomil. Lovely Thomil.
The magic system we see in Blood Over Bright Haven is so unique, and not something I would have expected working so well. Essentially, it’s like coding, but magic. A really nice combination of the magical fantasy with the scientific and analytical.
Sciona is a fierce, strong and inherently flawed character whom is attempting to make the patriarchy reconsider itself.
It is so far apart from Sword of Kaigen, and yet also so similar in the best ways.
The way Wang tells her stories, develops the plot and introduces and has her characters develop is masterful and I can honestly say if she continues to write like this she’ll become one of the great fantasy authors of our time.
In my mind I’m comparing it to Sword of Kaigen, which is why it isn’t the full 5 ⭐️. That feels a little mean, because it was almost perfect, and I highly recommend reading it, but it just didn’t have that same energy as Sword of Kaigen did for me.
Go bloody read this book.
