Author: Pierce Brown
Book: Dark Age, Red Rising #5

Well, what a wild ride that was.

I started listening to Dark Age (I’m doing the Red Rising Saga as audiobooks – and yes it counts as reading) a little over a year ago when I was in a major slump. I really struggled to get into it and decided to give up. I’m glad I waiting to go back to this series when I was in a better frame of mind.

Dark Age is a fantastic, harrowing next step in the Red Rising universe.

We have seen countless atrocities and deeply horrifying moments prior to this, and Pierce Brown takes it multiple steps further here, embodying the concept of “from bad to worse”.

There were numerous occasions when I was stood open mouthed in the gym listening to what was happening, aghast with pure incredulity.

Surprisingly, I have to say that my favourite POVs in Dark Age were not from Darrow, a major shift from the other books in the series. Lyria and Ephraim completely and utterly stole the show. Their development and progression were superb. Pierce did an amazing job at helping their characters grow, and develop from Iron Gold.

Darrow, Virginia and Lysander all had very strong stories here, but they were overshadowed (though Lysander was also a close top spot for me).

It feels only natural that at this point in the story (no spoilers), the perspective of Darrow can only tell us so much.

This entire story feels like a pressure cooker, and I’m vehemently concerned how my health will be able to cope with what Light Bringer, and finally Red God will have in store for us.
