Book: Gideon the Ninth
Author: Tamsyn Muir

That was absolutely, unbelievably okay.

Went into this knowing very little and came out feeling a little disappointed. In my head, I saw the reviews, saw the awards and expected it to be a “WOW”, huge fantasy sci-fi, world-spanning epic.

Alas, instead we get something that’s a bit more akin to a forced proximity trope that ends up spanning 16 hours (audiobook).

I honestly also really struggled with understand who was who, who belonged to what house, and what house stood for what. There were points that it was so unnecessarily convoluted that I genuinely had to stop and take a break to get my head around things.

The story itself has a lot of positives, it’s moving in the right direction and it ended up being a satisfying, if not slightly underwhelming finish.

There was constant and weirdly unnecessarily sexualised language which just felt forced in, without any actual romance. Hey, I don’t mind you throwing sexy shit in there. But it felt so forced and at times a bit distracting from the plot.

Meh. I’ll probably read book 2, but won’t be rushing to do so.

It’s complicated. It’s not an epic. But it’s not bad.
